Beginner Brazilian Jiujitsu class at Kaski Kamppailu
Decision of excellence

Why Kaski’s course?

Everyone of us was a beginner once. When you first show up, there’s no need to really know anything, you can forget about fear of failure as well as thinking about how you look on the mats. We will help you get started and make it as easy as we can!

Safe and encouraging environment

We are here to learn together with a curious mind and we want everyone to go home in one piece.

Equality

Everyone is welcome as they are and we all thrive on the same mats. Everyone is seen, heard, and supported.

Reciprocity

We are more than a place to train, we are a community. We work together, help each other and are not afraid to ask for help. For us, bjj is an individual sport that we practice together.

Brazilian jiujitsu is not just a martial art – at its best it’s a lifestyle, which affects the way you see yourself, others and life’s challenges. At minimum, you will notice how your fitness, mobility and self-confidence increase already in the first weeks. Take the first step and sign up today!

FAQ

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

You don’t need any prior martial arts experience. You also do not need to be fit. Nor do you need a good understanding of what bjj actually is. Just come to class with an open mind – we will teach you the rest and welcome you in. Step by step you will gain knowledge and enjoy the learning process!

You will probably have your first class on a beginners’ course with other beginners and all you need to have with you are athletic clothes (without zippers), like shorts and a t-shirt, plus a water bottle. Trim your nails beforehand and remove all jewelry before class. Some practitioners like wearing a mouthguard, but that is not necessary, especially in your first class.

We train barefoot, so bring flipflops or equivalent for walking between the locker room and the mat. Wash your feet prior to entering the mats.

Most importantly come with a curious and open mind!

No.

There is no need for you to get in shape in order to start bjj. Training bjj will improve your fitness. At first, it may take a hot minute to get used to the new type of exercise, but that is completely normal. We encourage all to find a pace for themselves that is comfortable enough and we aim to structure classes so that this is possible in cooperation with your training partner.

No, you are not.

Bjj is suitable for all ages and backgrounds. Pace and intensity of the training can be adjusted per your experience, goals and fitness level.

That is completely normal! Many of us have been anxious about this in the beginning. On the mats you will realize fairly quickly that we all have the same goal of learning technique together in a safe manner.

On the beginners’ course we start slowly, proceed with control in mind and learn to respect our training partner’s boundaries. You will soon notice that the anxiety has disappeared when you focus on technique and just having fun with the group!

No.

Prior experience in wrestling, judo, boxing or other martial art can come in handy, but everything you need to know will be taught to you from scratch.

As in all sports, the risk of injury cannot be eliminated completely. We can do a lot about the safety of our training with good coaching and guidance, proper technique and taking care of our training partners.

Bjj teaches you to know your limits – tap early and train safe.

No.

Competing is possible at any age, but you can also enjoy coming to class and improving your bjj without ever competing. We encourage you to choose your own way. You can train for so many reasons: fitness, self defence, technique, community, personal development, competition etc.

Then you are in the same situation as so many of us when getting started.

During the beginners’ course you will get to know some of your new training partners and later on in any class, you will probably already know someone! We welcome new people into our community and try to structure classes so that you get to know others and the sport.

Whenever our training schedule says nogi, we will be training in normal athletic wear, often shorts and a t-shirt or equivalent. When class description states BJJ (or perhaps sometimes gi), everyone will wear a bjj gi to class. The color of the gi plays no role for us, beginners wear a white belt. At the gym we can give you tips on finding a good fitting gi as they come in different shapes and sizes.

At Kaski, we recommend that every practitioner take out their own voluntary leisure-time insurance that covers combat sports / martial arts training. Kaski does not insure the members. It is wise to check with your insurance company whether your current policy covers combat sports / martial arts training.

Easy.
